What is DjView ?

DjView is an open-source DjVu file viewer for the Zaurus.

What are DjVu files ?

DjVu is excellent compression format for storing and viewing documents of one or more pages, in colour or black and white. It far outperforms other bitmap formats (e.g. GIF, PNG) in respect to file size when applied to scanned documents, and is also very efficient for documents which have originated in digital form (e.g. PDFs). DjVu behaves just like an image file format and is therefore not dependent on any particular fonts or other resources being available. Think of DjVu as an electronic photocopy in a surprisingly small file size, and you've got the idea. DjVu is currently developed by LizardTech who provide commercial compressors and free browser plugins. DjVuLibre is open-source GPL version of their library which can be found on Sourceforge.

Features
  • Works for colour and bitonal (black and white) documents.
  • Supports multipage documents.
  • Does not rely on installed fonts (unlike PDF).
  • The image can be rotated by 90 degrees for better viewing.
  • Invoke via the command line for power-users.
How can I get it ?

DjView for Qtopia is open-source and released under the GNU General Public License. The source code is freely available (see below). For a contribution of $10 the compiled DjView ipk file can be downloaded from Handango. This entitles you to email support from djview@vaagmaer.com and free updates. Additionally, your contribution supports the development of further high-quality software for your Zaurus.

OK, but how can I create DjVu files?

Commerical software for creating DjVu files can be obtained from LizardTech, this software gives the best results in terms of image quality and compression. For free, there is the online service Any2Djvu, which is very versatile and does a good job of coverting a range of different document types. If you are a Linux user, command line Linux tools are available from the Sourceforge site, but these are really only useful for bitonal (black and white) documents.

I need help about something !

Or, send an email to djview@vaagmaer.com (ideally, after donating $10 via Handango... )

Source Code

Download the latest source code: djview-qtopia-1.1-src.tar.gz

The sources and package available here include a port of DjVuLibre to the Zaurus. The port is trivial - it just required editing the config.h file, no source code is modified. The DjView program here was written from scratch to provide a viewer frontend to DjVuLibre for Qtopia. Note that DjView currently statically links with the library as this reduces the total required filespace if you just need a viewer. Previously released versions of the source code are available from the release notes page.

Instructions on how to build DjView are included with the source code. In order to compile the sources into an ipk the Trolltech development environment for Qtopia is required.
